The 2002-03 academic year found 584,000 international students on U.S. campuses. In contrast, only one percent of American students, about 161,000, study abroad and a full two-thirds of that one percent head to Western Europe. Great place, don't get us wrong, but they don't have a monopoly on amazing architecture (pyramids of Egypt), great culture (the Incan and Amazonian angles in Peru), or top-notch universities (Kyoto University in Japan).
A recent report filed by NAFSA: Association of International Educators (www.nafsa.org) places the largest blame on our educational system: College policies, albeit often unconsciously, discourage study abroad more than they encourage it.? Due to a lack of leadership, rigid curriculums, and a lack of predeparture preparation and reentry assistance, many colleges end up deterring a student's desire to study abroad.
But students who work with supportive study-abroad advisers, or figure out the logistics on their own through websites like www.GoAbroad.com almost never regret studying abroad. Financial aid is available (www.studyabroad.com/forum/financial_aid.html), credits can be transferred, and, as Eleanor Gross of Smith College in Northampton, MA, who is studying abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark says, "The best part of studying abroad is the kinds of relationships I've now formed with people. Plus, this spring, for my next three week break I will get a Eurail pass and go to Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Nice, and Barcelona.?" Not bad for a little end-of-semester party.
