London Hostels

St. Christopher's is one of the easiest hostels in London to find, with three locations to choose from at Camden, Greenwich and the South Bank of the city. The winding, brightly lit, three-story hostel is one of the few in the city offering Internet access (a nice touch despite the whopping £1, or about $2 for three minutes). It has a bar, its own laundry, a SKY television, a spa on the terrace, one of the most unique features of any hostel around, and, depending on the floor you choose, unisex bathrooms (which makes for interesting fun no matter how you look at it). Not the cheapest of hostels around, but not expensive by any means either, at around US$20 a night. There are large dorm rooms as well as double bedrooms available. The South Bank site, about 5 minutes from the tube, is in just the right place for easy access to the London Eye and St. Paul's Cathedral.

The British Youth Hostel Association has 230 great hostels in locations all over England and Wales. They serve the masses of student travelers coming to England each year, while providing a first-hand look at the city around them. The Liverpool location, for example, is filled with wall-to-wall pictures and stories of the Beatles rise to fame and final legendary status, Internet access, a wide variety of rooms for all types of travelers, including families, handicapped and business oriented guests. YHA members can also receive discounts on clothes, ferry crossings, insurance and entrance places such as the Millennium Dome in London as well as access to many of the activities run through the YHA. Rates vary across the country. If you want to pinpoint exactly which hostel to go to before you leave, check out their website for a detailed map of their entire British network. JG
