Big Wave Bay Take the MTR (subway) to Shaukeiwan, catch the number 9 bus to Shek O, and after a half-hour ride around a windy hill, arrived at a desolate bus stop. Walk adjacent to the local country club about a mile and you will find a fun little cove called Big Wave Bay. The biggest wave I saw slapped my ankle, but with all the surrounding caves and rocks to walk on, it is a fun half day trip. After Big Wave Bay be sure to visit Shek O, located a half mile south of the original bus stop for Big Wave Bay. Right where the busses let out is the China-Thailand Seafood Restaurant. The beer is cold and the food is good and cheap. There is also a small beach and walkway of restaurants, but the restaurant alone is worth a visit. Trail Notes It took four hours of hopping trains, buses and walking in circles to find the boat launch to Chek Keng youth hostel on the Sai Kung Peninsula. I knew that late in the afternoon only one boat to the island was scheduled. As our rickety old bus carrying only three passengers approached the final stop, I watched with combined shock and sadness as the boat casually took off. I never made it there, but hear it's a great little hostel. Because busses run late and infrequent in the outlying areas of Hong Kong it's best to not plan a tight itinerary. Try to keep your large pack in the main city and take your day pack with enough clothes for one or two days. Your back will thank you if you hit the trails. |
