Travel Eastern Europe, European Youth Hostels Eurail

Croatia hopes to adopt the euro by 2010, and other countries like Slovenia, Hungary and Latvia may switch as early as 2007. What does this mean to you? That Croatian bean stew you have been dreaming about for years will look and taste the same, but it could cost an average of 25 cents more per bowl when Croatia goes Euro. So, you better go now.

Croatia:

Croatia is home to the walled town of Dubrovnik. The walk around it is said to be one of the most beautiful in the world. Visit the Franciscan monastery in Makarska, various monuments, the 20-plus islands just off the coast in the Adriatic Sea, or Plitvice Lakes National Park, which is just one of several UNESCO World Heritage sites in the country.

Slovenia:

Slovenia has a beautiful Mediterranean coastline, limestone caves, over 200 museums and the Julian Alps. Whether you prefer to spend your time inside or out, you'll no doubt find plenty of ways to keep yourself occupied in Slovenia. In Ljubljana you can stay at Hostel Celica (www.souhostel.com), converted from a prison. They'll lock you up for as little as 19 euros per night.

Hungary:

Hungary has a social calendar full of festivals, events and concerts year-round. Visit Budapest and explore the ubiquitous museums and monuments. If you feel like you've absorbed enough history and want to let your mind and body relax, pay a visit to one of the many quirky bathhouses and take a dip with the locals.

Latvia:

Latvia is home to Hostelworld's 2005 Hostel of the Year, Friendly Fun Frank's Backpacker Hostel (www.franksbackpackers.hostel.com) in the capital city, Riga. Latvia offers five hundred lakes, the beautiful Baltic coast, forests and gorgeous old cities.

Can't decide on just one? Visit Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia at once by using the Eurail Regional Pass; a youth pass that's good for 10 days of travel over a two month period and costs only $224. Latvia isn't covered by Eurail. Instead use Eurolines (www.eurolines.lv), the bus equivalent of Eurail that has a 15-day pass for as low as $212.
