Bath
By: Staff (justin) 2006.12.11

Bath is an absolute must-see. Two hours away from London by National Express, Bath is a stunning white town nestled in a green valley. Sweeping crescents of white buildings traipse along curved lanes, all perfectly preserved from Jane Austin's time, when Bath was a hot destination for rich Victorians young and old who came to partake of the clean country air and revel in the supposedly healthful Roman baths, which had been in operation for nearly 2,000 years.

Now the baths are closed to bathers, but you can take guided tours-which are well worth the reasonable (for England) cost. In fact, Bath's an up-and-coming hot spot again, though you don't need to dress in corsets and top hats anymore. Designated as a World Heritage Site, Bath is a dream to wander through: it has abundant flowers; tiny, Dickensian, curved lanes weaving off the crescented main roads; beautiful vistas of lush forested countryside; and the delectable Sally Lunn bun, a sweet roll which has been made for 1,000 years in the same cafe; to the same secret recipe. You could do Bath in a day, but you might want to take two.
