What to Consider When Deciding to Study Abroad
CREDIT
- Make sure, before you commit to a program, that you will receive the proper credit for your efforts.
- Check with the study abroad office or an academic advisor at your school and get approval in advance (writing doesn't hurt either) for the expected credits.
- Find out how much credit you are eligible to receive. The amount of credit can also depend on whether the study abroad program is on a quarter or semester basis.
- Find out the minimum grade requirements for receiving credit. Some schools don't approve of the pass/fail grading method of overseas programs.
TIMING
- Plan ahead. Many of the deadlines for programs are six months to a year in advance.
- Think about when it would be best for you to study abroad. How flexible is your academic schedule?
- How long can you afford to study abroad, even with financial aid?
HOUSING
- Where you sleep at night can have a big impact on your experience. Make sure to fully explore all options, student housing, home stays with local families, and apartments with other students.
- Be sure to find out if the program offers housing in the first place. If they don't find out if they will be able to assist you in your search.
- Request an estimate of costs for your total living expenses, housing, food and travel.
COSTS AND FINANCIAL AID
- A lot of sponsor programs will combine all the program's costs into one comprehensive fee. These usually include tuition, housing, meals, airfare and other program related expenses. However it is important to find out specifically what the final figure actually includes.
- If money is an issue, take into consideration where you plan to study abroad. Obviously it will cost more to study in Europe than in South America.
- Research your financial aid options. In many cases, if you are currently receiving aid, you may be able to use it to study abroad. Talk to your financial aid advisor about what can be applied to your chosen program.
