Our Three Cents: Local Clubs and Haunted Pubs

FASHION CLUB
Salvador, BRAZIL
According to Leah Busse-Geagan, a senior at U.C. Santa Barbara who studied abroad in Brazil, you’ll definitely want to check out the Fashion Club in Salvador. The mix of people, the style of music, and the special theme nights are sure to impress. This elite club appeals to all types — so even a non-local like you will fit right in. The music varies between Brazilian and American hip-hop.
The club also hosts annual events. Its most memorable celebration, understandably, is a night of cheap tequila shots. Guests enjoy shots of tequila for around $0.23.
Busse-Geagan credits her host family in Brazil for introducing her to the nightlife, more importantly to the Fashion Club. “There are a few big clubs in Brazil, but the locals don’t frequent them that much,” Busse-Geagan said.
The moral of the story - if you don’t want to go someplace touristy, you need to find someone who’s in-the-know.
GRENADIER PUB
London, ENGLAND
This one’s for all you ghost lovers out there: a pub that appeared on the BBC in 1992 as one of the most haunted pubs in London. It even has a signature recipe for Bloody Marys.
The pub can be hard to find, but worth the attempt. Located on Wilton Row near the Lynchberg Hotel, the Grenadier was originally used by the Duke of Wellington’s Grenadier Guards. The pub’s patriotic colors (red, white and blue) underline its military past.
Many guests have reported seeing the pub’s main attraction: the ghost of an 18th century young Guards officer, who was apparently beaten to death by fellow officers upon the discovery that he was cheating at cards. These ghost sightings are far more frequent in September, which coincidentally is the month the officer died.
Other guests and the pub’s staff have witnessed locked doors suddenly swinging open, unexplained knocking sounds, and mysterious shadows leading up the pub’s staircase.
For a Bloody Mary and a ghost story sure to send a shiver down your spine, stop by the historic Grenadier pub for a night you’re sure to remember.
PICCADILLY CIRCUS
Toronto, CANADA
How would you like to get paid $5 just for going to a pub in Toronto, Canada? Sounds like a sweet deal, right? Well, it only gets better. Piccadilly Circus is home to the ultimate in college parties, and any group of 50 or more can reserve a ride to the pub in its authentic 1969 English double-decker bus.
Located on Pearl Street in downtown Toronto behind the Princess of Wales Theatre, Piccadilly Circus reversed its usual $5 cover charge in an effort to promote the bar while saving students some cash. Enjoy the bar’s theme nights, 27 huge screens with surround sound, drink specials, DJs, raised levels with go-go poles, an outdoor smoking area, and a T-shirt giveaway every night. And if that’s not enticing enough, ladies get in free every Friday before 11 p.m.
Celebrate back-to-school at the pub and witness the hottest bikini contests and wild bead parties, or check out the pub's annual Carnival, with fire jugglers, magicians and sword swallowers.
So what are you waiting for? Book a flight to Toronto ASAP! The pub is open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Put yourself on the guest list at www.piccadillycircus.ca to beat the line.
