Discount Hotel Websites for Student Travelers.

HotelHotline.com

HotelHotline.com is a useful search engine for hotels both at home and worldwide. They have a simple yet effective interface with impressive prices that match the better-known sites such as Expedia. One helpful aspect of the site is the convenient way they map out the city and arrange hotels by neighborhood. This feature assists even the most overwhelmed and unfamiliar city-goer with finding an appropriately located hotel.

Hotwire.com

Hotwire was voted 'best website for serious savings' by Money Magazine in September 2004. And for good reason. Their partners allow them to access their unsold inventory - empty seats on flights, empty hotel rooms, and unrented cars - at big savings. By showing the name of their travel partner after you book, Hotwire can get you cheap hotels that are significantly below published prices. The site does well on cheap hotels inside the US but only offers scarce bookings outside our borders, in only London and Paris. The website seems to find an extensive array of accommodation although it does not specify in numbers how many results it returns.

Travelocity.com

Travelocity won the 'World's Leading Travel Internet Site' by over 80,000 travel agencies around the globe. Like many cheap hotel web sites, they guarantee the lowest hotel prices or refund the difference. The "destination guides" offers printable guides to places to visit, including a photo and video gallery and weather centre which I found to provide a neat summary of prior- to- travel information. In terms of appearance, Travelocity's new layout is one of the most sophisticated and appealing because it has the air of attracting the wealthy with price ranges for the working person. Furthermore its 'last minute deals' link offers both great themed vacation ideas and great prices.

Expedia.com

Expedia, Inc. is the world’s leading online travel service and the fourth largest travel agency in the US. The company also won awards from both Good Housekeeping and PC world in 2004 for the quality and usability of the site. They certainly have an enviable reputation. Expedia claims it has one of the most comprehensive flight databases online, and yet for 'deeper discounts' it will send you to its partner Hotwire.com, which makes no sense when you consider that the LAX to London flight that I searched indeed came up cheaper with Expedia than Hotwire. Website highlights include simplified building of package holidays- perfectly suited to the overwhelmed and inexperienced traveller, and at the other end of the spectrum there is a specific link for corporate travel with extensive options and assistance proving the wide range of people Expedia is capable of serving.

Orbitz.com

Orbitz.com is a great starting place for booking hotels. They claim to be so confident in their low hotel prices that they are willing to refund the difference if you book with them and then find your hotel cheaper in the next 24 hours. And when I searched for a hotel in London, they truly beat Expedia and Travelocity, for the same place! Like most other sites, they allow you to select a hotel based on a city or point of interest, proximity to a particular address or by a hotel chain. But when it really comes down to it, I need a cheap place to lay my head in London. And I found it here.

Priceline.com

Priceline offers huge discounts at more than 10,000 hotels around the world. From 5* to economy accommodation, it's is the only place where you can 'Name Your Own Price'- Priceline’s own acronym- for unused hotel rooms. The catch is that you cannot find out the name or location of the hotel you are staying at until after you have paid. The website claims this is how it maintains such low prices. If your travel plans are flexible and you feel comfortable flying any time, staying anywhere and putting up your money before you know what exactly you are purchasing, then Priceline is the website for you. If however, you are just searching regular fares, their flight prices at least come up much more expensive than any of the sites above.

Cheaptickets.com

Cheaptickets has over 28,000 crown property ratings and also offer their 110% Lowest Price Guarantee- Shop with Confidence. They promise that if you book any of their special discounted rates and find a cheaper one on the net within 24 hours, they will meet that rate, and refund you an additional 10% of the difference between the rates. There is substantial information on the hotels including highlights, policies and general information and they do have a good selection of photos of the accommodation but be aware that unlike some other sites their prices don't include tax which will increase the cost of your holiday.

Lodgings.com

Lodgings.com specialises in offering accommodation in the inn's and B&B industry in the USA for the most part, although they do have a couple of links to Europe and Canada. Their selection is limited, sometimes only returning a single result, and there is no detailed information available on the net for these lodgings, however contact details are provided, and a select few have their own websites. The pages have a homely, simplistic feel to them, and they are not covered in flashy prices or special deals and so seem best suited to those seeking low key, family run accommodation with character and without the corporate input. The site is a PAII member (Professional Association of Innkeepers International) so bookings are secure.

BestValueInn.com

Best Value inns offer 400 inns, hotels and suites in North America. If you sign up for free value card membership you receive discounts on things like luggage purchases or room upgrades. A majority of Best Value Inns are AAA approved and some inns offer family programs. The accommodation like the website is simple and unexciting. Prices are reasonable but you get what you pay for. Their promotional deals do make the accommodation very cheap, value for money as their name suggest, but remains best suited to the traveller looking for accommodation with no great shakes.

www.web-hotels.com

Web-hotels doesn't look particularly different to any other site, but it does have the handy features of allowing you to choose to read the site in Italian or Spanish as well as offering you to send e-cards to family and friends of various destinations. The site offers a lot of middle of the range accommodation and while it claims to offer the option of searching for hotels or apartments, the search only returns hotel options which is frustrating. The detailed maps provided of both the general area and the exact location of the accommodation are good. The website also promises that its destination guides are comprehensive and indeed seem true to their word with suggested activities and detailed neighbourhood descriptions.

Cheapaccomodation.com

Cheapaccomodation.com is an independent price comparison company which displays over 35,000 deals in 1,250 locations. They promise to save you time and money by having a comprehensive directory link and in fact they do exactly what their name says. Their range of accommodation options is wide from hotels to apartments to B&B's and their price range is just as varied. Furthermore, their design is simple so it’s clear what is available. This site will definitely save you searching 100 others. Finally, their quirky links entitled fantasy nights, varying from tree-houses and lighthouses to igloos and caves give this site a nice edge to it.

Kasbah.com

Kasbah calls themselves the world’s most powerful travel resource, offering discount hotel reservations in 20,000 cities worldwide with extensive links to exotic locations. Although their homepage has a vast array of information and options, it is neatly organised and bearable. Also on hotels page are featured destinations and top 30 hotel destinations. Their resources are extensive and well- researched, including travel information for backpackers (the only backpacker- specific resources found amongst these sites) outdoor activities and eco-travel amongst other specialist examples. They appeal to all types of customers and all pockets.
